%When Type 1 fonts emerged in 1983-1984, the media range for type at that time was quite
limited: mainly print, mostly professional and progressively office printing. There was this
straight line between the screen and the printer. What does it say about licensing? At the
beginning, things were quite predictable but confusion arrised as we gained the ability to send
and receive documents digitally. After the PDF, we got the multimedia apps, the Web, the mobile
apps and scattered everywhere a more and more unwoven World Wide video stream.
%A Chartered Accountant, Frank Adebiaye (Paris, France) is also a document designer and
type designer. He founded the open source type foundry Velvetyne Type Foundry in 2010. He has
written or co-written numerous articles on typography and graphic design as well as several
books. His typographic and writing work has been the subject of exhibitions, lectures and radio
programmes. Frank Adebiaye also advises type foundries on their marketing strategy.

%In 2022, Bye Bye Binary released its first collection of inclusive fonts .On this occasion, they build
and implement the Queer Unicode Initiative (QUNI), which allows fonts with inclusive glyphs to
be gathered around a single encoding system. Laure Giletti, Ludi Loiseau and Pierre Huyghebaert
will present the collective’s questions about the licenses that would be adapted to fonts and
the forks published by the BBB type library.
%Bye Bye Binary (BBB) is a Franco-Belgian collective, a pedagogical experiment, a
community, a variable typo-graphic creation workshop, a network, an alliance. The collective,
composed of 27 people and initiated in 2018, explores graphic and typographic forms (letters,
ligatures, punctuations, linking and symbiotic elements) taking as a starting point, afield of
experimentation and research subject, the inclusive and non-binary language and writing.

%Naïma Ben Ayed will provide a critical overview of Arabic type and typography in
relation to Latin. She will then delve into possibilities to expand the discipline and pedagogy
of multi scripts typography and type design away from the limitations of the status quo.
%Naïma Ben Ayed is a Provence born, Paris graduate (Estienne school, 2009), London based,
type and graphic designer. She set up her independent practice in 2019 after working for several
years at Dalton Maag studio. She creates Arabic and Latin retail and custom typefaces as well as
lettering and visual identities. Through platforms such as Futuress and School of Commons she
engages in the question of opening up type design pedagogy to broader audiences and creating
tools to do so.

%I am a typeface designer in a unique role — working on small projects for a big company.
In the time I have been working for Adobe, I witnessed several major transitions in the way we
make fonts. I will illustrate these technological changes in the context of my own work. Beyond
that (and hopefully, without any political bias), I will try to explain what kinds of problems
the use of PostScript fonts represents today, and why they’re best left to the history books.
%Frank Grießhammer (Nuremberg, 1983) studied graphic design at HBKsaar in Saarbrücken,
Germany, and at ISIA in Florence, Italy. In 2010, he graduated from Type & Media Master program
at KABK The Hague. After TypeMedia, he worked with FontShop International in Berlin, and with
the Adobe Type Team in California since 2011. Today, Frank works at the intersection of code and
design from The Hague. He is periodically teaching workshops in type design programs across
Europe.
